Infrastructure funding to boost green collar opportunities

Red River College receives $4.25M in funding for infrastructure projects

Winnipeg (Thursday, July 2, 2009) - Winnipeg's Red River College is getting equal contributions from both federal and province governments to invest in infrastructure, totally $4.25 million.

Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Ron Lemieux said the funding, announced Thursday, will strengthen Red River's education base.

"Every time we improve educational opportunities, we better equip students to get into the workforce and gain employment," he said.

With funding will build infrastructure for a number of programs. These trades programs will build opportunities for students in landscaping, construction, and energy and engineer fields. Red River college will be growing green collar workers for the 21 century.

The new energy centre will enable the college to double the number of students in the power engineering program. The greenhouse and landscape construction shop will be state-of-the-art facilities in green space management, said college president Jeff Zabudsky.

"Adding new labs and reconfiguring existing spaces will allow us to increase capacity to meet the strong demand for skilled workers in Manitoba."

It is expected that students will be able to use the new facilities within two years.
