MGEU donation to support refuge in the city for rural patients

“After receiving a devastating diagnosis, and then having to leave home, a patient’s stay at A Port in a Storm means they don’t have to sweat the small stuff and can focus on healing.” — Michelle Gawronsky, MGEU President

Winnipeg (05 Feb. 2016) — The Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) recently donated $20,000 to A Port in the Storm, a non-profit organization serving rural and northern adults who require medical treatment in Winnipeg. On February 2, MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky and 2nd Vice-President Stephen Roznowsky took a tour of the organization’s current facilities.

Safe, supportive and affordable home like environments provide space to heal

“This organization provides safe, supportive and affordable home like environments for patients and their families,” said Gawronsky. “I’m from Vita, and as someone who’s been through medical treatment away from home with family members, words can’t say what a difference support like this can make.”

In 2015, representatives from A Port in the Storm made a presentation to MGEU Executive Officers to tell them about the organization’s mandate of providing one or two bedroom fully furnished suites to any northern or rural adult requiring medical care in Winnipeg. Accommodation is $58 per night and includes TV, phone, Wi-Fi, free laundry access and parking.

MGEU donation will help improve programs and keep costs down

“As a province-wide union, we try and support efforts that benefit a range of Manitobans,” Gawronsky said. “After receiving a devastating diagnosis, and then having to leave home, a patient’s stay at A Port in the Storm means they don’t have to sweat the small stuff and can focus on healing.”

The donation will be used to enhance current programs and keep room rates as affordable as possible.
