Twenty-five years ago, on January 28, 1988, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned our country’s criminal abortion law in historic decision that gave women the right to abortion on request without restrictions.
Ottawa (28 Jan. 2013) - On the 25th anniversary of the landmark Morgentaler decision on reproductive rights women attending the National Union of Public and General Employees' (NUPGE) training session reflected on the importance of the date.
National Representative Brenda Hildahl told the delegates that "history has proven that when women put their voices together, we can change history. And we must join together and raise our voices now!"
January 28 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Morgentaler Decision. On this date, 25 years ago, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the criminal abortion law and gave women the right to abortion on request without restrictions in Canada.
It was a day of celebration for the thousands of pro-choice activists who had worked diligently for decades to win abortion rights in Canada.
Hildahl commented that "this is a great example of what women can do when they join their voices together. And together we can make a change for all women – not just union women. We must fight to make changes for ourselves, our sisters, daughters, mothers and our grandmothers!"
