Murdered women, missing justice

Families for Sisters in Spirit, have organized marches and rallies in major Canadian cities on Valentine's Day, to recognize missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls.

Ottawa (13 Feb 2012) - The annual Women’s Memorial March is held on Valentine’s Day each year to honour the memory of women who have died due to the violence of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual abuse.

The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), has long supported families' calls for action, justice, and accountability, through sponsorship of the Native Women's Association of Canada's (NWAC) Sisters in Spirit initiative.

Now in its 21st year in Vancouver, the March has become an immensely powerful women’s action across Canada. Marches for 2012 have been announced in Vancouver, Penticton and Merritt BC as well as Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, Thunderbay, Toronto and Ottawa.

It takes courage and commitment to remember and honour murdered and missing women, and to end the violence that vulnerable women face on a daily basis. Thousands will march on Tuesday to call for respect and justice for these women.
