NAPE members representing Air Services, Marine Services and Highway Workers meet in St. John's to plan for negotiations.
St. John's (27 March 2012) - Nearly sixty members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) recently met to discuss plans for upcoming contract talks for the Maintenance and Operational Services, Air Services and the Marine Services components of the union. The components represent highway workers, such as heavy equipment operators and technicians, ferry workers and water bomber pilots and engineers. The collective agreements for all three groups expire March 31, 2012.
According to NAPE President Carol Furlong, “Many of the employees in these components have specialized skills that are in demand worldwide. Government has to recognize the need to be competitive in order to keep these employees and their skills in this province. If government wants to maintain quality public services, such as safe highways, they have to be competitive in order to ensure the availability of workers to carry out those services which are vital to the people of our province."
Delegates discussed proposals for negotiations and elected their negotiating teams at this component convention.
