NSGEU members at Crothall Laundry ratify contract

“We are pleased to have a new three year collective agreement for the members, who provide laundry services for Capital Health, IWK, South Shore and Colchester regional hospitals,” says Joan Jessome, NSGEU President.

Halifax (02 Jan. 2013) – Members of the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees' Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) working in laundry services and employees of Crothall Healthcare, employed by the Capital District Health Authority, voted last night to ratify a tentative agreement reached during conciliation on December 18.

“We are pleased to have a new three year collective agreement for the members, who provide laundry services for Capital Health, IWK, South Shore and Colchester regional hospitals,” says Joan Jessome, NSGEU President. “I would like to acknowledge the Bargaining Committee and Employee Relations Officer, Bill McKiggan, who worked hard to reach this agreement.”

“The collective bargaining process works well in Nova Scotia,” says Jessome.

Highlights include a three year term and a 7.5 per cent increase over the term of the agreement, as has been achieved by other health care workers in Nova Scotia.

The workers are part of the core team responsible for handling 11 million pounds of laundry annually for most of CDHA, IWK, South Shore and Colchester regional hospitals, as well as several nursing homes in these areas. They wash, dry, finish and deliver this laundry to help ensure our health care facilities are kept clean.

There are approximately 60 members of the local. The new collective agreement begins July 8, 2012 and ends July 7, 2015.
