NUPGE responds to flood crisis in Pakistan

NUPGE and its Component unions have contributed $50,000 so far as fallout from the disaster in Pakistan escalates.

Ottawa (26 Aug. 2010) - The National Union of Public and General Employees and its Component unions across the country have given $50,000 to relief efforts in Pakistan with fundraising efforts continuing.

James Clancy, national president of NUPGE, explained that "our members, along with all Canadians, have watched in horror the devastation this flood has brought to the people of Pakistan. We hope that our contribution will help to alleviate some of the suffering that is taking place."

"During a crisis like this, we always see the Canadian public step forward to offer support to those caught in the maelstrom. We want to see aid and comfort brought to the destitute and suffering, and as Canadians we want to see people’s dignity restored to them."

Unions working with Oxfam Canada on flood relief include NUPGE, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC). the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP), the United Steel Workers Canada (USWC) and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW).

Oxfam Canada and the Humanitarian Coalition have launched appeals to the Canadian public for support to emergency relief efforts.

So far, Oxfam says, its staff on the ground in Pakistan have reached more than 330,000 flood survivors with shelter, hygiene kits, cooked food, cash vouchers and clean water.

"The leadership, support and solidarity of Canadian Unions, their locals and members are crucial at this time," says spokesman Robert Fox. "Union support will help us provide clean, safe water as we work to respond to immediate needs and head off a second disaster - the risk of a spike in deaths from water-borne diseases."

The federal government has announced it will match individual donations until Sept. 12. NUPGE is encouraging it's members, and all Canadians, to contribute towards flood relief for the people of Pakistan.
