Share your priorities for Manitoba budget

Manitoba government opens pre-budget consultations.

Winnipeg (12 Jan. 2012) - Monday night, Jan. 9, marked the first of six pre-budget consultation meetings Finance Minister Stan Struthers is hosting over the next week and a half around the province.

The purpose of these meetings is to give all Manitobans – including those who work for the provincial government, its crowns and agencies – the opportunity to have their voices heard as the government works toward announcing the 2012 budget this spring.

As always, the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) is encouraging its members to attend a meeting in their area and pose a question to the finance minister about the funding that impacts their workplaces and their jobs.

“This is a great opportunity for the province to hear directly from its own employees about funding issues that have a direct impact on MGEU/NUPGE members and the services they deliver, says President Lois Wales. “We keep hearing about how the economic downturn and the costs of last year’s flood have impacted the Province’s bottom line. It’s up to us to remind the government how important the services are and why they can’t be cut.”

All consultations run from 7 to 9 p.m. and the locations are as follows:
• Jan. 16, Brandon, Sokol Hall, 33 11th St.;
• Jan. 18, north Winnipeg, Win Gardner Place, 363 McGregor St.;
• Jan. 19, Thompson, St. John’s United Church, 52 Caribou Rd.;
• Jan. 23, Dauphin, Parkland Recreation Complex, 200 First St. SE; and
• Jan. 25, Ste. Anne, Knights of Columbus Hall, 132 Centrale Ave.

If you cannot attend a consultation, you can share your views in writing with the minister at Budget Consultations, Room 103, 450 Broadway, Winnipeg, R3C 0V8; by email at minfin@leg.gov.mb.ca or by filling out the questionnaire at www.gov.mb.ca.
